Etiquette When Visiting Temples in Southeast Asia

Chiangmai, Thailand – Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a major pilgrimage destination during Buddhist holidays. A 309-step walk up to reach the 600-year-old temple. Chedi in gold blazes like a beacon over the city. Beautiful!

DOs and DONTs in the temple

  • Pray
  • Show respect in the temple and shrine
  • Keep you head lower than Buddha images and monks
  • Wear sarongs or wraps to cover legs and shoulders
  • Contribute a small amount to the attendant
  • Remove your shoes before entering the platform
  • Maintain cleanliness
  • Don’t wear shorts
  • Don’t touch the Buddha images
  • Don’t show affection in public
  • Avoid loud conversations
